How your level is decided

Two things move you up: how many documents you have, and what kind they are. One complex document can matter more than five simple ones.

1

Count your documents

Every W-2, 1099, 1098 or 1095 is one document. Two or fewer keeps you on the free Basic plan. A third moves you to Premium.

2

Check the type

Business income, investment sales, rental property, K-1s and multi-state income each require extra schedules — that's Advanced, even if you only have one of them.

3

We tell you before you pay

Upload first. We read your documents, show you which level applies and why, and display the exact price before anything is charged.

Common questions

Is the live tax agent really free?

Yes. On every plan, including the free one. You can ask questions while you file, or hand the return over and have a verified agent prepare and e-file it for you. The plan price does not change either way.

What counts as a "tax document"?

Any official form reporting income or a deduction: a W-2 from an employer, any 1099, a 1098 for mortgage or student loan interest, a 1095-A for marketplace health insurance. Receipts, bank statements and pay stubs are not counted.

What if I pick the wrong plan?

You don't have to pick. Upload your documents first — we read them, tell you which level applies and why, and show the exact price before anything is charged.

Why does one document sometimes cost more than five?

Because complexity, not volume, drives the work. Five W-2s all flow onto the same line of your 1040. A single K-1 or a rental property adds an entire schedule with its own rules.

Is the state return included?

Yes, on Premium and Advanced. Filing in more than one state moves you to Advanced.

When do I pay?

At the end, once you've seen your completed return and refund amount. Nothing is charged before you review it.
